Dog Poop Won’t Come Out: How Does It Affect The Dog?

He squats and strains, but often to no avail. The stool is firm, hard, dry, falling apart or your dog produces flattened stools. If constipation lasts for a long time, his stool will accumulate in the intestines. This is not only painful but also dangerous.

In less severe cases with a careful diet and a little movement, the dog returns to being in great shape. For more complex cases it is good to contact the veterinarian to carry out the appropriate tests on the dog.

Why Can’t The Dog Poop? Constipation in dogs is a problem concerning the emission of feces. He will have little or no bowel movement.

If your pet lately struggles to “go to the bathroom” it is good to check what causes constipation. For the dog it can be painful and unfortunately our four-legged friend cannot communicate it to us with words, but if you are careful observers you might notice it.

If you notice any unusual behaviors like these listed then check with your vet if he has this type of problem:

  • The dog moves continuously in a circular fashion
  • The dog is often crouched
  • If it is severe, it whines
  • Decreased appetite, weight loss
  • He retched
  • Tension in the abdomen, the dog yelps, and pains if you press on the stomach

Try to pay attention to some behaviors and maybe when you take him for a walk analyze the feces, check the dimensions: if they are small, he does few or does not at all.

Pay attention and see if the dog takes a long time, if it is struggling and painful, if the feces are liquid, if there is blood or mucus. Constipation also cancels hunger: the dog has little appetite, refuses food and eats little , even the mood is affected.

If you have had any episodes of vomiting, check for redness or swelling in the anus. It shouldn’t take more than 48 or 72 hours between bowel movements, otherwise contact your vet.

There are also physical factors such as enlarged prostate, which can lead to intestinal obstruction and constipation in the dog .

The Most Common Causes: The Dog Can’t Poop

The main cause of constipation in dogs is poor diet

Giving your quadruped too much raw or dried bones will cause the feces to stick together into a hard, yellow and dry mass, which will be difficult to expel from the large intestine.

A dog’s constipation can also be caused by a diet with insufficient fat or dietary fiber (fiber) and dehydration resulting in excessively dry stools.

If the dog’s constipation is not accompanied by any other symptoms, such as pronounced pain and swelling in the abdomen, blood in the stool, vomiting or lack of appetite, we can suspect that their cause is only improper nutrition.

Post-nutritional causes of dogs not pooping include:

  • insufficient level of physical activity needed to stimulate intestinal peristalsis,
  • hernia
  • colon cancer
  • enteritis
  • the presence of a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract.

Constipation may also appear as a result of administration of certain medications and neurological disorders, as well as paresis of the hind limbs.

In such problems, constipation may (but does not have to) be accompanied by various additional symptoms – weakness, lack of appetite, vomiting , weight loss, pale mucous membranes and a hard, painful stomach.
