If you find yourself searching on google for “My Dog is in pain and can’t poop”, then you know you are in a concerning situation that needs immediate attention. The information we provide below (Reliable Tips) will definitely be helpful so, you can feel at ease to continue reading.

Sometimes, especially in dogs that like to ingest everything within their reach, will produce feces that can become problematic when it comes to their expulsion.

If your dog cannot defecate and cries or if he complains when he poops, he is sending you a signal that something is wrong. In other cases, the inability to defecate will require rapid veterinary attention, because, as we will see, we could be facing an obstruction.

Today we are going to tell you what to do if it seems to you that your dog has stuck poop or if he whimpers every time he tries to poop it out.

The first thing is that you never try to give him human medicines and that before trying to administer natural remedies, consult with our specialists.

When a dog puts food in its mouth and swallows it, a food bolus is formed that descends through the esophagus to the stomach and, later, the small and large intestines.

Once all the nutrients have been used, the waste goes to the rectum to be expelled through the anus.

Before explaining the main causes, it is important to talk about the symptoms of constipation in dogs. Well, the main sign that we will observe in the animal is the clear difficulty in expelling feces.

This article on what to do with these digestive problems that your dog has is for informational purposes only. Both when we talk about vomiting, diarrhea or fever, we must bear in mind that it can be a symptom of many diseases, such as coronavirus or parvovirus.

My dog cannot defecate and is crying, why is he complaining?

The first thing we have to understand when your dog protests wanting to poop is why. A mistake in careless PetLovers is to believe that he does it to get our attention. If your dog definitely can’t defecate, keep reading to try to find out the underlying cause and go to the vet with as much information as possible.

Sometimes, the stools are very scarce and compact, the dog has problems evacuating them or, directly, does not defecate for different reasons such as an inadequate diet or dehydration.  It is true that furry ones cry sometimes so that we pamper them more, but if they scream just when they are pooping, it really hurts. Even if he does poop, worry about it anyway.

There are several reasons why a dog cries in this situation and you have to know how to find out. Let’s start by examining his feces. From him. A furry has to eat about twice a day and have a bowel movement for half an hour after each meal. For example, if our dog has ingested bones, these will have to be eliminated, forming very hard whitish stools, in which it will be possible to differentiate bone fragments. It is easy, in these situations, for us to observe our dog making evident efforts.

These stools cannot be black, reddish, orange, yellowish, whitish, green, or black. They must have an earthy brown tone. The dog will not be able to defecate and will even cry. It is also possible that the dog cannot defecate and bleeds from the anus due to the injuries caused by such hard feces on the mucosa of the rectum

When you pick them up, they have to be able to be stored without getting the wrapper dirty, nor can they break or be too dry. If your colleague defecates with this regularity and with poops in this way, he is healthy.

 If he yells, it is possible that this poop will come out very dry, with blood stains and even with parasites.

When to See a Doctor

If we observe faeces halfway out, we can extract them, gently, pulling them. If we notice any resistance we should stop and consult our veterinarian and, of course, avoid or limit the consumption of bones. If the compacted stools are due to dehydration, it is likely that we will observe more symptoms. These are cases that require veterinary intervention.

It is worth noting that attempts to eliminate constipation at home can only be made when the animal feels normal, and there has not been a stool for more than 3 (maximum 4) days. The life of a dog that does not urinate is in serious danger. An adequate diet will favor the correct intestinal transit, as well as an adequate supply of water.

In some cases (for example, with intestinal obstruction), defecation can only be established surgically or with special preparations that only a specialist can prescribe. Sometimes tumors, abscesses, growths or enlargements in the anal area, in the glands, or in the prostate can be behind defecation difficulties and, also, they will need veterinary attention.

In addition, constipation is only a symptom of some diseases, therefore, in order to save the animal from problems with stools in the future, it will be necessary to find out the cause of problems with defecation.

With worms, for example, the introduction of deworming agents will be required, with stress – sedative sedatives, with bacterial ailments – antibiotics, and so on. Call the doctor as soon as possible if:

  • The dog is sick, there are a number of dangerous symptoms (refusal to eat, breathing problems, bad breath , etc.);
  • The animal refuses food;
  • When trying to feel the stomach, the dog runs away or starts to “cry”;
  • If the animal has not pooped for more than 4 days;
  • If no independent attempts to cope with constipation have been successful.

Now, if a dog cannot defecate or urinate, we must urgently take it to the veterinarian since it would be an emergency.

My dog can’t poop, what can I give him?

In some cases, the dog cannot defecate because there has been an obstruction in the digestive tract that occurs when the dog ingests an object that ends up getting stuck, such as a ball, a toy or, again, a bone.If he does not poop at all and only complains, he is very constipated. The reason is a poor diet and poor hydration. You have to make sure he drinks well every day.

Have your drinker always full of fresh water. When you feed him, change his dry feed for wet cans and pour some water into it, which will provide a little more liquid to the body. In such a situation, the dog may not defecate and vomit or may not defecate and does not want to eat either, that is, we will notice that it is upset. It requires veterinary intervention because it is necessary to determine where the object is to know if it will be able to come out or if it will have to be removed by surgery, since the obstruction can be partial or complete.

In addition, he changes his feed for a high-quality one. To encourage his guts to move and shit more and better, walk with him more. These tips should be applied only if you do not find what we mentioned in their stool. If you see that he has blood in his stool, there are no home remedies that are worth it, you have to take him to the vet.

The reason is that it is very possible that you have a small or large internal bleeding, which is the reason for so much pain. That blood flows to the anus and is expelled through the stool. These wounds sometimes heal on their own, but don’t wait and take action.

My dog cries when he wants to poop

The reason for these injuries may be due to a poor quality diet that has irritated the intestine, but also because they have eaten something strange from the street. Some dogs like to eat stones or things on the ground that can hurt them. To avoid these situations we must keep our dog in a safe environment, away from dangerous objects that can be ingested. We also need to monitor the status of the toys from him. If one is broken, it is advisable to replace it so that the dog cannot swallow any pieces. We insist on precautions when offering bones.

The furry ones use their mouths to communicate with their environment and explore it by licking and gobbling. Your responsibility is to prevent him from eating feces or garbage.

If he has eaten something that could harm him, you have to go to the doctor to have it removed. Also do not resort to home remedies if you see blood in their stool. But red spots do not always refer to this cause. Sometimes a dog cannot defecate because it suffers from a pathology that affects its intestinal motility, such as hypothyroidism

Sometimes, a dog tries so hard to poop that he hurts himself and bleeds. If this is your case, you will have to correct your diet.

But the blood can sometimes mean that you have cancer somewhere in your digestive tract. The clues to try to discern that this is what you have in his body and in his behavior.

A tumor will take away the desire to smile and run, you will be more tired, sleepy, not hungry and you will lose a lot of weight. If you notice that he loses weight drastically and bleeds from his anus, he may have cancer. We must also bear in mind that colitis, that is, the inflammation of the colon, can be confused with constipation since its symptoms include painful evacuation, prolonged efforts to defecate or the expulsion of small stools with the presence of blood.

My dog complains when pooping, why?

Finally, and although it is not common, your dog may be suffering from a hernia. This is an irregular displacement of a part of his body. A disc herniation, for example, is the displacement of a disc in the spine.

And how does this affect his ability to poop? Well, if he gets stuck in the area where he has to expel it, he won’t be able to and it will give the sensation that he has poop stuck.

is my Dog Constipating?

When observing symptoms of constipation, various medications can be given to the pet, but you still need to contact the veterinarian, as it is necessary to determine the causes of the problem. You should also know what is important to do to prevent constipation in the future.

Causes of Constipation in Dogs

Surrounding it just before its exit are the anal glands that will release a liquid that gives the feces the particular smell of the dog. Any problem that occurs in this intestinal transit can make the dog unable to defecate. What we can do will depend on the cause. Problems with bowel movements can occur for a variety of reasons.

In fact, there are plenty of reasons for constipation. In the best cases, the inability to relieve the need develops due to improper diet, in the worst cases, due to illness. So, a dog may experience problems with defecation in the following situations:

  • Inappropriate diet (constipation in a dog after bones or feeding meat alone, due to low water intake, frequent treats of a pet with rice or corn);
  • Acute or chronic diseases of internal organs (gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys, etc.);
  • Little mobility;
  • Foreign objects in the digestive tract of a dog (stones, cellophane, polystyrene, toy parts, etc.);
  • Worm infestations ;
  • Exhaustion or obesity;
  • Condition after surgery (anesthesia often causes constipation);
  • Diseases of the nervous system (paralysis, paresis, etc.);
  • Oncology of the digestive tract;
  • Taking certain medications ;
  • Stress (against the background of changing food, moving to another apartment, aggressive attitude from people, etc.);
  • Senile age in a dog (in pets older than 7-8 years);
  • Hormonal disbalance.

Considering that there are a lot of reasons why a dog does not go to the toilet, a veterinarian can prescribe the right treatment by examining the animal and conducting all the necessary tests.

Top 10 Most Common Causes

Inactive lifestyle

The work of the digestive system is disturbed if the pet spends most of the time in a supine position. The dog needs constant movement. Therefore, you need to walk with her more often so that she not only empties her intestines, but also actively plays.

Feeding

An unbalanced diet can cause constipation. The dog should regularly receive fiber and the required amount of liquid, and many owners feed the animal with dry food or only protein food, which is a gross mistake. To normalize digestion, the diet should include plant foods, you also need to give the animal porridge from various cereals.

Binge eating

If you feed your four-legged friend very often, then the food will not have time to be digested, as a result it accumulates, is pressed over time, and then dries out. As a result, the stool becomes hard, so it does not pass well through the gastrointestinal tract. So the owner should reasonably limit the food of his dog.

Intestinal atony

It is observed in dysbacteriosis and some infectious diseases. A decrease in peristalsis of the intestinal walls leads to the fact that the patency of feces is impaired. Over time, the feces are compressed, dry, and as a result, they come out with great effort, which causes severe pain.

The presence of a foreign body in the intestine

Foreign objects can get into the dog’s stomach and intestines: a piece of stick, bones, cotton wool, a plastic bag. Some pets develop neoplasms in the intestines. All this prevents the passage of feces. As a result, the animal cannot empty itself normally.

Diseases of the nervous system

The autonomic nervous system is responsible for the activity of the intestines. Violation of its work changes the activity of contraction of the smooth muscles of the intestine, which leads to diarrhea or constipation.

Diseases of the spine

As in the previous case, constipation is associated with impaired innervation, but here the root cause is damage to the spinal cord. The process is complicated by the fact that the animal is not able to actively move, leads an inactive lifestyle.

Age

Over time, the work of almost all internal organs is disrupted in the animal. This can lead to intestinal atony. Often constipation is accompanied by such “senile” diseases as:
• Diseases of the liver, kidneys, pancreas, rectum.
• Prostatitis.
• Inflammatory processes in the rectum, groin.
• Orthopedic pathologies.

Consequences of constipation

If a dog’s constipation does not go away for a long time, it leads to serious complications:
• Intoxication of the body occurs, since feces are not excreted;
• Almost all internal organs are affected;
• The load on the cardiovascular system increases;
• The disease often turns into blockage of the intestines;
• There are cracks in the rectum, which causes an infectious disease;
• Sometimes intestinal ruptures occur;
• If the dog does not defecate within a week, then death may occur.

constipation symptoms

Constipation is easily determined by the following signs:
• A small amount of dry feces comes out;
• During defecation, the dog tenses up;
• The pet often sits down to defecate, the feces do not come out, and the dog sits for a long time;
• Dog whines or yelps during a bowel movement;
• Appetite decreases or disappears;
• The abdomen is swollen, dense to the touch;
• The dog is depressed.

If, in addition to constipation, the dog is vomiting, then this indicates that the intestines are completely clogged. In this case, you must urgently seek veterinary help, otherwise the pet may die in a short time (within a day).

If it is not possible to contact a veterinarian in the near future, then a digital examination should be performed. To do this, it is recommended to use a rubber glove, which must be lubricated with oil or petroleum jelly. It is necessary to determine the presence or absence of feces in the rectum.

If fecal masses are felt, then this indicates coprostasis – stagnation of feces in the rectum. If feces are not found, then this indicates chymostasis – stagnation of food masses in the small intestine. In the first case, you can help the dog by introducing vaseline oil rectally heated to 35-40 ° C. In the second case, an operation is required.

What to tell your veterinarian

In order for the doctor to quickly diagnose and prescribe treatment, the owner must provide him with detailed information:
• The age of the dog;
• Pet lifestyle;
• Features of nutrition;
• duration of constipation;
• Whether vomiting was observed;
• Feeding menu for the last day;
• How has the behavior of the pet changed;
• Is urination disturbed;
• Presence or lack of appetite.

Usually, the symptoms and history are sufficient to make a diagnosis. If there are doubts and extraneous signs, other procedures are prescribed:
• X-ray of the abdomen.
• Blood analysis.
• Ultrasound.
• X-ray of the intestine to determine its patency.

Help with constipation

If the dog has difficulty defecation, but the feces come out (albeit with difficulty), then the problem can be solved as follows:

• Walk the dog more often in the fresh air;
• Provide the necessary amount of liquid;
• Change your diet;
• Give laxatives;
• Make a cleansing enema;
• Use medications to improve peristalsis and digestion.

If during defecation the animal is very restless, it cannot empty itself, but at the same time feces are felt in the rectum, then you can help as follows:

• Administer vaseline oil rectally;
• Give a laxative.

It is important to note that laxative drugs activate peristalsis, but do not make the stool wetter. Without the introduction of oil into the rectum, laxatives will only aggravate the situation of the pet. Cracks may appear that will cause infection.

It should be noted that such assistance can be provided only in case of prolonged constipation. If the difficulties with emptying are associated with certain diseases, then the help of a qualified veterinarian is necessary, who can prescribe the appropriate treatment after professional diagnosis.

In other words, the owner of a pet can help him only if, apart from constipation, there are no other disturbing symptoms.

Moreover, if the dog experiences severe pain when probing the abdomen, the feces do not come out at all, and feces are not probed in the rectum, then you cannot help yourself, you must urgently take the pet to the hospital.

Enema

As noted above, with constipation in a pet, it is first necessary to give an enema. If possible, it is necessary to consult with a veterinarian who will advise which solutions and in what volumes it is better to use.

You need to understand that enemas are shallow and deep. The first one can be done on your own. But if constipation is observed for a long time, then it is necessary to make a deep enema. This procedure can only be performed by a qualified veterinarian.

The following liquids can be used for enema:
1. Boiled warm water.
2. Glycerine water.
3. Vaseline oil.
4. Boiled water with the addition of a small amount of fish oil.

Volumes of fluid for enema

In order not to harm the dog, you must adhere to the recommended volumes:

  • Up to 50 kg – 1 liter.
  • 20-40 kg -500 ml.
  • 10-20 kg – 200 ml.
  • 5-10 kg – 100 ml.
  • Up to 5 kg – 50 ml.

For large individuals, a special mug is used, which is suspended to a height of about a meter. For medium-sized pets, syringes are used. You can give an enema to miniature dogs with a syringe. The tip of any instrument used must be rubber, otherwise the anus may be damaged.

Step-by-step procedure:

  • 1. First of all, it is necessary to prepare a solution of the required temperature. The liquid should be warm – about 39 ° C. If constipation is observed for a long time, then it is forbidden to use water, otherwise the feces may swell even more, as a result of which the intestines will be completely clogged. In general, with prolonged constipation, it is better to consult a specialist.
  • 2. To relieve pain and relax the dog’s intestines, it is recommended to inject No-Shpu intramuscularly in a volume of 0.1 ml per 1 kg of weight.
  • 3. Before the procedure, the animal must be laid on its side. If this fails, you can do the enema in a standing position, but this can make it difficult to get fluid into the rectum.
  • 4. The dog may experience pain and bite the owner, so you need to wear a muzzle. It is recommended to do an enema with a partner. The owner of the dog should be in her field of vision so that she feels calmer and can completely relax. Let an assistant do the enema.
  • 5. The tip of the instrument and the anus of the pet should be lubricated with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to reduce pain.
  • 6. The enema is injected to a depth of 3-5 cm, depending on the size of the dog. When entering, you need to make rotational movements, that is, as if “screwing” the tip.
  • 7. It is necessary to firmly hold or securely fix the pet. If he wriggles, then the procedure will not work, and you will only cause additional inconvenience to the dog.
  • 8. Fluid should be introduced gradually. There should be no entry barriers. If the solution does not enter the rectum, then you need to check the tip, which can become clogged with feces. If the tip is clean but no liquid is injected, stop the procedure and contact your veterinarian.

The reason that the solution is not injected into the rectum may be the presence of bones, lumps of worms, dry feces and others. Then the cleansing procedure can only be carried out by an experienced specialist, you must quickly seek the help of a veterinarian.

In the event that the owner managed to pour in the entire volume of liquid, then you need to carefully remove the tip and press the anus with your tail. The animal should remain in the supine position for about 5 minutes, only after that it can get up. Ideally, the dog should defecate immediately. If this does not happen, then it is recommended to take a walk with your pet to activate the intestines.

Enema puppy should be done in the same way. The difference is that a syringe is used, and the volume of liquid can be about one tablespoon. Boiled water should have a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees.

Prevention of constipation in dogs

If the dog has not been diagnosed with any diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, then constipation can be prevented with the help of preventive measures. An adequate diet and exercise will facilitate intestinal transit. In dogs with a tendency to constipation, it may be necessary to feed them with wet food or by soaking the food in the water. To do this, you need to follow some tips:

  • Everyone knows that dogs love bones, but owners are advised to limit them in the pet’s diet.
  • Dog food should be varied.
  • You need to feed your pet not only with protein foods, but also with cereals with vegetables, which contain a large amount of fiber.
  • When using dry food, the dog must receive a sufficient amount of liquid.
  • To improve the functioning of the digestive system, it is occasionally necessary to include beef tripe in the diet.
  • It is necessary to carry out deworming periodically.
  • Daily walk with the dog in the fresh air, the walk should be at least 30 minutes, and you should play with your pet.
  • The owner must ensure that the animal does not lack small items (buttons, corks), and even more so that they are not swallowed.

It is important to note that such preventive measures help prevent constipation only in a healthy dog.

home laxatives

To save the dog from suffering, the owner must help her empty her intestines. For this, it is not necessary to use medications. There are the usual ways that are available to everyone:

  • 1. Kefir. The dairy product has a laxative effect. The dog needs to pour yogurt in the evening in unlimited quantities. If the pet does not want to drink it, then you can pour it into your mouth with a syringe. If the dog is small, then 2-3 teaspoons are enough, for medium animals – 2-3 tablespoons, but for large individuals, the dose should be 200 ml.
  •  2. Castor and flaxseed oil
    helps with constipation in a dog.. You need to add 2-7 tablespoons to food before bed. The oil is great for emptying the bowels. It is recommended to add it to boiled vegetables. There are no contraindications for use. Overdose is not possible. After ingestion, the dog must defecate within 8 hours.
  • 3. Another popular laxative is vaseline oil . It is necessary to inject oil into the dog’s mouth with a syringe in a volume of 5-80 ml, depending on the weight of the animal. To achieve the maximum effect, the procedure should be repeated every 12 hours. It is important to note that the oil is not absorbed in the small intestine, so it softens the stool in the rectum and facilitates its expulsion. If necessary, the oil can be administered with an enema, after warming it up a little.

Medications for constipation

To solve the problem with emptying the animal, it is necessary to use medicines. However, it is not recommended to buy drugs on your own. Medicines can only be prescribed by a veterinarian, taking into account the complexity of the disease and its causes.

It is important to know that laxatives have some contraindications:
1. Preparations should not be given to pregnant dogs.
2. For problems with the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.
3. Sick and malnourished dogs.
4. In the presence of foreign objects in the colon.

How to get rid of constipation in a dog

If constipation happened in a dog for the first time, no dangerous symptoms were noted anymore, you can try to help the pet on your own, without contacting a specialist (but only if the animal feels well, and there was no stool for more than 3-4 days!). So, the first help with constipation will consist of the following actions:

  1. First, you need to try to feed the animal with food that helps to establish a chair (pumpkin puree, beets, white cabbage, zucchini, the freshest fermented milk products like yogurt or kefir, bran). You can add vegetable, linseed or olive oil in small doses to dog dishes;
  2. If the pet is accustomed to dry ready-made food, then the granules can be soaked in water before being served to the dog ;
  3. With a dog who has constipation, it is worth walking more often, longer and more actively. Movement promotes intestinal peristalsis;
  4. To provoke the release of feces can help massage the dog’s abdomen. But it is better to refuse such actions if the belly is hard, and during touching the animal feels pain;
  5. Fresh water should be added to the animal’s bowl as often as possible ;
  6. The use of petroleum jelly for constipation in dogs is an effective and safe solution to the problem. Large individuals with a syringe (without a needle) are injected with 2 tbsp. tablespoons of vaseline, small – 0.5 tbsp. spoons twice a day;
  7. Eliminate constipation in a dog will allow Lactulose (Dufalac) – give 0.5 ml per 1 kg of animal weight, 2 times a day before defecation;
  8. You can also cope with constipation with the help of the Bimin veterinary preparation, an oily liquid based on vaseline oil. The agent is administered to dogs inside at the rate of 1 ml per 1 kg of body weight (in a 30 ml vial) once a day. The drug has no side effects, but is contraindicated in intestinal obstruction.

Summary – what is worth remembering?

Constipation in a dog is a condition that is accompanied by great discomfort and pain. It can also lead to many serious health complications, so it must not be underestimated

Constipation is most often caused by a poor diet with insufficient fiber or fat content, dehydration, and too little exercise.

They can also be a symptom of certain diseases and abnormalities in the structure of the gastrointestinal tract.

 If our pooch suffers from slight constipation, we can help him by changing his diet, adding an additional portion of fiber or fat or a little paraffin oil. More severe constipation, lasting more than two days,  will require help from a vet. In these cases, we can only go to the vet, since in the most serious impactions it is necessary to administer fluid therapy and extract the mass with anesthesia. Mild cases can be resolved with enemas or laxatives that must be prescribed by the veterinarian.
