My Cat is Sneezing and Has Watery Eyes – What To do?

Causes of conjunctivitis in cats

  • The nature of the oozing and whether the infection is limited to one or both eyes can help find the cause. When both eyes are affected and the oozing is clear, allergies or systemic illnesses may be the triggers. Other causes can be linked to irritants like dust, wind and allergens which often cause itchy eyes.
  • When only one eye is affected and the cat is trying to rub it, it can indicate the presence of a foreign object or simply the presence of eyelashes in the eye.
  • When the oozing looks like mucus or pus and the conjunctiva is red and swollen, it is very likely that the infection is caused by bacteria. Sometimes the secretions are so thick that the eyelids may appear stuck after the cat has taken a nap.
  • When both eyes are affected and the oozing is purulent, it can indicate a virus. If the infection begins in one eye and then progresses later in the other, Chlamydia or Mycoplasma viruses may be suspected.
  • When the cat starts to squint while keeping the eye closed in pain, a foreign object or other serious eye disorder can be the cause, such as keratitis, uveitis or glaucoma which can cause blindness.
