My cat is afraid of noises

My cat is afraid of noises

Cats are often frightened by loud or unusual noises like thunderstorms, music, jobs, house guests … Their reaction is usually to go into hiding to feel safe. Is it possible to get them used to all these noises? How to appease them?

Why are cats afraid of noise?

Cats are often fearfully natural, they can be scared of all kinds of things. Cats can especially be stressed by loud and / or unusual noises : music, thunderstorm, objects falling on the floor, vacuum cleaner, etc. This obviously varies from one individual to another, some will be afraid at the slightest noise while other cats will be more serene.

In general, cats fleeing when they are afraid, they will hide somewhere where they feel safe. Stress can manifest itself in other ways in cats: excessive licking, uncleanliness (the cat makes its needs out of the litter), aggressiveness, etc …

When cats have exacerbated fear reactions to noise that is not harmful to them, we talk about phobia. Some cats are more fearful in nature than others and are more prone to developing phobias. Cats can also have grown up in noisy living conditions, with little stimuli, etc …: the slightest noise then becomes a source of stress in adulthood. They can also develop phobias following a traumatic experience (exposure to a loud noise without the possibility of fleeing for example).

What are the solutions to reduce their fear?

In the event that it is a fear of noise, several solutions are possible to soothe cats.

It is first possible to give them a anti-stress food supplement in the form of a cure or in anticipation of a stressful event: invitation of people to the house, work, etc.… Anti-stress food supplements generally have no side effects or addiction. It is often possible to give them over a long period of time to animals. Do not hesitate to talk about it with your attending veterinarian.

It is also possible to connect a diffuser whose components have soothing properties. The diffusers must be connected continuously in the main living room of cats for at least a month. If the diffuser allows a clear improvement, then it is quite possible to leave it plugged in for a long time.

In case of stressful noises for the animal, you can also try to to play with him. Indeed, the game will divert your cat's attention: it will focus on something other than noise. Gambling is also an excellent anxiolytic.

The ideal is toget used to from an early age kittens hear all kinds of noises to prevent them from causing stress in adulthood: vacuum cleaner, music, doorbell, etc.

In adulthood, it is possible to get cats used to noises, but care must be taken to proceed gradually. For example, to get your cat used to music, put the music on low volume for a short time (a few seconds). If your cat shows no signs of stress, we recommend that you reward him well and congratulate him so much that he associates this noise with something positive. You can gradually increase the volume of the music and the listening time. Your cat must obviously have access to a hiding place at all times so that he can take refuge there if he was afraid. Never force your cat to stay in your arms while listening to music, it should be able to flee if necessary.

When it is not possible to control the volume, do not hesitate to use videos on the internet to work with your cat and get him used to noises (thunderstorm for example).

If all these measures are not sufficient, we advise you to consult a veterinarian. He will be able to examine your cat and determine if it is a fear or a phobia. Veterinary prescription treatments can make a big difference. Your veterinarian will set up behavioral therapy and if necessary medical treatment.
