It would seem easy to bathe the cat. But when you get down to business, a number of questions pop up. For example, what temperature should be water, what means are better to use for bathing, to wash a pet in the bathroom or to use a basin? And is it even possible to bathe cats? About this and much more in our article.
Washing cats: is it necessary and how often?
Cats for the whole world are known for their cleanliness. But even if the pet never leaves the apartment, harmful bacteria and microbes that are spread through the air are deposited daily on his fur coat. When licking, they enter the cat’s digestive tract and, as they accumulate, undermine immunity and lead to chronic diseases.
To prevent this from happening, the cat’s fur coat from time to time needs to arrange a “general cleaning”, in other words, bathing days. But how often?
In this matter, it all depends on a number of factors: the characteristics of the breed, the state and well-being of the cat, its lifestyle (whether your pet walks on the street or not). Representatives of some breeds are recommended to bathe more often (for example, sphinxes), others it is better not to wash others (for example, Persians) unnecessarily.
If your pet walks on the street, the frequency of his bath will be directly dependent on the degree of contamination. In general, “revelers” are recommended to bathe at least once a month.
Pets who do not leave the apartment, it is desirable to bathe 1 time in 3-6 months. Often not worth it, because it leads to dry skin and deterioration in the quality of wool.
Important: sick and weakened pets are not strongly recommended for bathing. The same applies to animals under stress or quarantined (after vaccination, illness, etc.).
How to wash a cat?
Washing cats involves the use of special tools. It is impossible to remove dirt and excess sebum only with the help of water, and human shampoos, conditioners and soap are not suitable for bathing a pet in terms of pH.
If you wash the cat with similar products, the condition of its skin and coat will deteriorate. In most cases, it is inappropriate means lead to dandruff and dermatitis.
Therefore, to wash your pet is better to use only high-quality products designed specifically for cats (for example, Iv San Bernard, Bio-Groom, Oster, 8 in 1). These tools are designed to meet the characteristics of the skin and coat of the cat. They gently remove all impurities, while not drying the skin, but on the contrary, nourish it with useful elements.
Today, pet stores have a huge range of shampoos and conditioners for cats, taking into account the peculiarities of their coat. Before buying funds, carefully read the appointment and do not forget to follow the recommendations for use.

Before you go to the wash, you need to prepare for it. Make sure that the cat does not eat before bathing. It is better if it takes 4 hours from the last meal to the bath procedures.
- The optimum air temperature in the room where you will wash the cat is not below +22 ° С.
- Suitable water temperature: + 33–35 ° С.

Why is it better to wash the cats in the basin and not in the bath? First, you reduce the risk of injury. Many cats while bathing try to escape from the bath and injured on its side. Washing in the pelvis eliminates the possibility of such injuries. In addition, the cats are psychologically calmer to be in the basin.
If you still plan to bathe in the bath, be sure to put a towel on the bottom so that the pet does not slip.
How to wash cats in due form? We learn in stages.
- Fill the basin (or bath) with water. The water level is up to the pet’s chest.
- Smoothly put the cat in the basin (bath).
- Carefully wet wool. Ensure that water does not get into the eyes, ears and mouth.
- We apply special shampoo on wool. A small amount is enough, otherwise it is difficult to wash it off. Carefully wash my paws, tail, torso and neck of a cat — necessarily in the direction of the growth of the fur. Do not affect the area of the ears and face.
It is advisable to remove dirt from the face locally without soaping the head completely. To remove dust, wipe it with a slightly damp sponge or hand. If in addition to shampoo you also use air conditioning, follow the recommendations for use.
- Rinse wool thoroughly.
- After washing, be sure to dry the cat so that it is not cold. If possible, wrap it in a towel and hold it on your hands for about 10 minutes. So you not only help her dry off, but also relieve the stress gained during bathing.
If the cat is not very afraid of noise, you can use a hairdryer. We make sure that there is no draft in the room where the pet will dry. Otherwise, colds can not be avoided.
These simple rules will help make water treatments effective and safe. Take note and try!
