The Great Dane is a dog as big as it is tender, but its ancient origins are also those of a strong and fighting dog.

Already present among the ancient Egyptians as a large dog with a Harlequin coat, traces of it have been found later in those of the East.

The Orientals, in fact, loved to breed large and strong dogs that at the same time had elegance and proportions in the body.

The ancestors of the European Mastiffs, in fact, derived from the breeding of these enormous ones dogs also used as barter by the Assyrians.

These dogs of great grandeur came to Europe thanks to the Great Danes, a nomadic people who arrived on our continent after breaking away from the Huns.

They were said Ishkuza (wandering people), warlike shepherds whose trace dates back to around 600 BC who accompanied huge dogs: at the same time they were fighters and fast.

They were molossers used both for game hunting and for hunting large prey such as wild boar or deer.

The specimens that landed in Germany were carefully adopted in the royal seats: at the court of princes this dog was treated like a king, even securing a gold collar.

There was, however, no precise name that could identify him: Dogo of Ulm, Great Danish, German Mastiff, and not only that, were the names.

The Germans wanted at all costs that this dog breed be identified as Germanic: in 1877 the name of German Mastiff from a Berlin association.

It was in 1888 that the Great Danes Club, but in the following years there was a dispute between who he believed was a dog of Danish origin and who was German.

Actually the appellation of “Great Danish” it was simply referring to the fact that this dog was widespread in Denmark.

In 1920 the name of “Alano” was made official to this breed of dog: in Italy in 1970 the SIA, Italian Alani Society was founded and since then its breeding has been increased.

From the various crossings made in Germany, therefore, today’s Great Dane has both the characteristics of a Tibetan Mastiff and a Giant Greyhound.

Peculiarities of this breed

From the color of the particular mantle, the Great Dane appears from a distance a perfect statue: elegance, strength and nobility have called it “The Apollo of the dogs”.

The tallest dog in the world, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records in 2017, was a Great Dane named Freddy: 1.75m for 70 kilos of weight.

This dog reached more than two meters in height standing on its hind legs, but ate about one and a half kilograms of food per day.

It is obvious that a giant size dog eats a lot: however, there is a need for a correct diet for the Great Dane, with foods that he can eat and others that it would be better not to give him.

He would devour everything we give him, but you need to give him some rules to prevent him from eating too quickly and having a twist in his stomach.

It would not seem like it, but it has a very delicate health: at birth it does not weigh even a kilo but in 2-3 months it reaches even twenty.

This involves a fast development of the body, especially of bones and joints: the dog’s diet must be integrated with vitamin D and calcium to promote growth.

It is not a dog that resists the cold: also in the past as they gradually understood it and, both for this reason and for its statuary beauty, as a hunting and fighting dog they made it a companion dog.

There can be various diseases to which Great Dane is most predisposed: proper prevention would help it.

Not a particularly smart dog, but cleverly stubborn yes: it will not be strange to find him almost purring as he slowly pushes us away from the sofa to take our place.

Adopting a Great Dane means adopting his whole world, his needs and his playfulness even when he could overdo it without realizing it.

One of its peculiarities certainly is that of knowing how to be the shadow of the master: finding him on his stomach on his bed while pretending to sleep is practice.

This could lead him to not tolerate that the owner spoils him less, because perhaps he also shares with other animals in the house.

He would not be aggressive but certainly a jealous man who would put the muzzle: he is sociable with everyone but the Great Dane gets along better with some dog breeds than with others.

Certainly enough to reassure him and never make him feel excluded. One of its peculiarities, then, is to imitate the people to whom it is linked.
